The Government of Vanuatu, through the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Utilities (MIPU), has officially witnessed a groundbreaking ceremony for the Olal Airport Project on Ambrym Island.

The ceremony brought together key government representatives, including the Honourable Minister of MIPU, the Honourable Minister of Internal Affairs, and the two Members of Parliament for Ambrym Island — Honourable John Salong Damassing and Honourable Basil Buleban. Also in attendance were Directors, Managers, and Technical Officers from the Public Works Department, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vanuatu, and the Department of Ports and Harbours, along with other government delegates.

The groundbreaking marks a significant milestone for the Olal Airport Project, with works now commencing on site clearing and runway preparation.

Air transport plays a crucial role in connecting communities across Vanuatu’s islands, enabling access to essential medical services, education, and government support.

The Vanuatu Government is funding the project at a total cost of VT 142 million, and the contract has been awarded to Pierre Brunnet Entreprise Générale (PBEG). The construction period is expected to take seven months to complete.

This project forms part of the Government’s broader vision to improve rural infrastructure and enhance access to opportunities across all islands. This includes investments in roads, bridges, wharves, and rural airports such as Olal.

MIPU, through the Public Works Department (PWD) and with the support of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vanuatu, will manage the project to ensure that construction meets the required quality standards and specifications of a Category C Aerodrome, and that works are completed on time.
