The Government of Vanuatu, through the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Utilities (MIPU), has officially witnessed the groundbreaking ceremony for the Tanna Road Rehabilitation Project (Phase 3) — a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving connectivity and supporting economic growth on Tanna Island.
This significant project is being funded by the Government of China through a loan agreement between the Governments of Vanuatu and China, with a total investment of approximately 3.25 billion Vatu.
The project is divided into two key sections:
-
Section 1, funded by the Chinese Government, begins at Imanaka Junction, near White Grass Airport, and ends at Nose of Pig.
-
Section 2, funded by the Government of Vanuatu, starts from the South Tanna Rehabilitation Project and extends to Manuapen, near the volcano. Construction on Section 2 commenced in July 2025, with completion expected by December 2026.
Tanna Island plays a vital role in Vanuatu’s economy, particularly through agriculture and tourism. The island’s rich volcanic soil makes it highly productive for agricultural development, while eco-tourism—especially attractions such as Mount Yasur—continues to contribute significantly to both the local and national economy.
The Government of Vanuatu extends its sincere appreciation to the Government of China and the Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) for their support and funding. Special thanks are also given to the Public Works Department (PWD) team for their hard work and dedication in making this important project a reality.
