Nguna Island’s Climate-Resilient Road Officially Opened

A significant milestone has been achieved with the official opening of Nguna Island’s newly upgraded climate-resilient road, a development that will positively impact the entire island population of approximately 1,800 people.

The official ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister of Vanuatu, Hon. Jotham Napat; the Minister of Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Hon. Xavier Emmanuel Harry; the Member of Parliament for Éfaté Rural, Hon. Fred Samuel; the Australian High Commissioner to Vanuatu, H.E. Max Willis; the Ambassador for First Nations People, Mr. Justine Mohamed; senior government officials, traditional chiefs, and members of the Nguna community.

In his address, the Minister for Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Hon. Xavier Emmanuel Harry, highlighted that the Nguna Island Road Improvement Project is the first road project fully supported and jointly funded by the Government of Vanuatu and the Government of Australia. He confirmed that the project was completed and officially handed over on 10 December 2025.

The Minister also emphasized the importance of inclusivity, noting that the newly constructed wheelchair-accessible footpath now enables people with special needs to safely and easily access essential services, including the Silimoli Health Centre, the Area Council Office, primary and secondary schools, and community facilities.

The Australian High Commissioner, H.E. Max Willis, described the road as more than physical infrastructure, stating that it connects families and strengthens everyday life.

The Minister extended his appreciation to Kellen Construction and Malekula Timber for their work on the project, as well as the Public Works Department and VAI4D for their technical and implementation support.

The project represents a total investment of 185 million vatu. More than just infrastructure, the road provides safer travel, improved access to services, stronger community connections, and new opportunities for future generations. The completion of this project marks not only the end of construction works, but the beginning of a stronger and more connected future for the people of Nguna.
